Every great handbag starts with the right material. The choice of fabric decides the bag’s look, touch, weight, waterproof performance, service life and final price. For custom bag orders, buyers often compare genuine leather, PU leather, canvas, nylon and polyester. Each material fits different market positioning and customer needs.
Genuine Leather
Genuine leather is made from animal hide. Full-grain leather is the top grade. It keeps the natural surface of hide, breathes well and forms unique patina after long-time use. It is durable and can last many years with proper care. Top-grain leather is slightly polished to remove small blemishes, with neat texture and stable quality. Genuine leather has premium touch and high market value, widely used in luxury handbags, business briefcases and high-end crossbody bags. Its disadvantages are higher cost, longer production lead time and natural differences on every piece of hide.
PU Leather (Faux / Vegan Leather)
PU leather is the most popular synthetic material for fashion bags. It is polyester base fabric coated with polyurethane. It can imitate grain, pebble, saffiano and embossed leather patterns. PU leather is vegan and cruelty-free. It is water-resistant, easy to wipe clean, with stable color and texture batch by batch. Compared with real leather, its price is much lower, which is perfect for mid-range fashion bags, cosmetic bags and promotional gifts. High-quality PU can last for years, but low-grade PU may peel or crack under heavy use or strong sunlight.
Canvas
Canvas is thick woven cotton or cotton blend fabric. It has a natural, casual and eco-friendly style. Waxed canvas is a special version: wax coating brings water-repellent and anti-stain features, and it will form vintage marks with use. Canvas supports printing and embroidery well, so it is widely used for tote bags, shopping bags and casual backpacks. Plain canvas absorbs water easily and gets stained without coating.
Nylon & Polyester
Nylon is light, tear-resistant and strong. We usually mark its thickness by Denier (D), such as 420D, 600D, 1000D nylon. Higher denier means thicker and stronger fabric. After water-repellent treatment, nylon works great for travel bags, sports backpacks and daily commuter bags. Polyester has similar performance. Recycled polyester (made from PET bottles) is a hot eco option for sustainable brands. Both fabrics are lightweight, quick-drying and low-maintenance.
Lining and Accessories
Most bags use 190T, 210T polyester taffeta or nylon twill as lining, which is smooth and prevents scratch inside. Hardware includes zippers, buckles, rivets and D-rings. Zinc alloy hardware with electroplating is common; customers can choose gold, gunmetal, nickel or custom colors.
How to select? If your clients target luxury market, pick genuine leather. For affordable fashion and vegan lines, PU leather is the first choice. Casual daily styles go with canvas. Travel and outdoor bags prefer nylon or polyester. As an OEM & ODM bag maker, we can adjust material, thickness, coating, hardware and craft according to your samples or requirements.
